Myths and Silk: Weaving a Road from China to the Mediterranean
On Saturday 5th of August, SOAS will be holding a free Family Day as part of the Silk Road Summer School.
Students from SOAS Silk Road Summer School* will take you in a wonderful adventure following on the footsteps of ancient cultures travelling and meeting on the Silk Road. Acclaimed storyteller Sally Pomme Clayton will introduce travellers of all ages to the many wonders of the Silk Road, where goods and people have travelled from Far East Asia to the Mediterranean carrying with them exotic languages, spices and tales.
Sally Pomme will share how stories and storytelling have been, and still are, immensely valuable to the nomadic and pastoral cultures that travelled the Silk Road. Myths, epics and fairytales have been told by storytellers in the tents and caravanserai all along the Silk Road. The stories travelled too – from China to Turkey, carrying with them characters and images from magical Jinns to golden apples, from mysterious Saints to tales about how stories came to be.
You will learn how to use the Abacus and to count in Mandarin. You will meet a calligraphy master, and learn some basic rules to creating this fine art. You will also learn more about Buddhism and how the Silk Road facilitated its spreading throughout Asia.
Traditional teas will be served to quench travellers' thirst but you may have to observed the traditions and attend the whole ceremony first!
Come and join us! No booking required.
* The Silk Road Summer School is aimed at adults and will take place between the 31st of July and 4th of August.
