Untangling the Threads of Devotion and Yoga: Bhaktas, Sufis, & Naths in Mughal India

Hindu devotional (bhakti) communities expanded rapidly across North India during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, and with them, new and sometimes critical attitudes toward yoga and the figure of the yogi emerged. In this talk, we will explore the way in which Indian Sufis and Hindu bhakti poet-saints conceptualized yoga and the motives behind their literary depictions of yogis, in relation to their own devotion-centered religious sensibilities.
