About this event

A list of speakers will be confirmed in due course

SAAG will be hosted jointly by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, the Centre for Migration and Diaspora Studies and the Centre of South Asian Studies at SOAS.

In recent years, SAAG meetings at Goldsmiths, Edinburgh and Durham have explored the nature of social change in South Asia. This year’s meeting will shift the focus to ask questions about change within the discipline of anthropology and the study of South Asia.

  • How and why have the concerns of anthropologists working in South Asia shifted?
  • What makes something new or original in ‘Indian Sociology’?
  • What are the relationships between social change in South Asia and anthropological theory?
  • Are there parallels between social change in South Asia and the content of anthropological writing?
  • Does the history of anthropological writing reflect the history of South Asia?
  • Has the notion of the ‘region’ changed as a frame of reference?

SAAG runs on the basis that papers are pre-circulated and critically introduced on the day by discussants, the author then gives a short response and discussion is open to the floor.
