Biography

Ziran Tang is a PhD candidate from the Department of History at SOAS. She is currently conducting research on the ethnic history and cultural migration of the Ahmao (阿卯)/Dahuamiao (大花苗) in the border region of south-west China.

Her major research interest lies in the history of ethnic groups in modern Southwest China, with a particular focus on folklore studies. In 2022, She presented her paper 'Miao identity at the crossroads: The reception of Western educational and religious messages by the indigenous populations of Weining, South-West China (1904– )' at the International Conference-Christianity, Modernity, and Ethnicity in the China-Southeast Asia Borderlands, held by the Duke University. 

In 2023, she presented her paper 'Christian Mission and the Cultural Migration of the Weining Miao in the early 20th Century' at the 16th biannual NACS Conference-Dreams and Landscapes: Chinese Complexities in the University of Gothenburg.

Research interests

Ziran has an interest in the Ethnology of southwest China; The interaction of ethnic cultures in modern China; Folklore Studies, especially ethnic customs and ethnic beliefs.
