Course overview

Course aim

This course provides a good grounding in the structure of the language in order to be able to follow contemporary spoken and written Hindi. This course prepares the students for some new social and practical situations whilst also gradually introducing grammar. As the course progresses, it aims to provide you with further confidence and vocabulary to discuss more complex topics, write and read more challenging texts in the language. This course is designed for students to develop more fluency in spoken Hindi and greater understanding of spoken Hindi by listening. This course is delivered by the Language Centre

Method

The course is taught in English and Hindi with coverage of the four key skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), and a good balance between communicative activities, structure practice and grammar participating in group and pair work. You are expected to attend regularly, participate in class tasks and complete homework regularly to ensure learning progress.

This will be achieved through 20 hours of blended learning: this is composed of 15 hours of online structured lessons with the teacher. This is supplemented by a minimum of 5 hours of guided independent learning supported by complementary material. The course objective will be achieved within the course.

Material

The course will be based on the textbook: Snell, R. (2014) Get Started in Hindi (2nd Ed. + CDs). Teach Yourself Books: London.

Entry requirements and progression route

Some previous knowledge of the language is necessary to join Elementary Hindi I. If you wish to join Hindi Elementary 2 or 3, you should have completed Elementary 1 and 2 respectively at SOAS Language Centre or have an equivalent knowledge of guided learning hours (20 hours blended learning per sub-level). The progression route from Hindi Elementary 1 is to Hindi Elementary 2, from Elementary 2 to Elementary 3. Upon successful completion of Hindi Elementary 3 you will be advised by the tutor.

Structure

Hindi Elementary 1

By the end of the course you should be able to:

read simple dialogues in Hindi script.
talk about daily routine in present and past.
talk about skills, simple desires, leisure time and interests.
say what you can or can’t do.
describe what is going on right now.
make comparisons.
describe your neighbourhood.
make plans for the future.
talk about future events.
express doubts and possibilities.
numbers up to 100.

Hindi Elementary 2

By the end of the course you should be able to:

read dialogues and write sentences in Hindi script.
make plans to meet friends.
plan holiday- expressing wishes and ‘if’ expressions
describe past events.
distinguish regular actions from one-off events.
link verbs (actions) in sequence.
make appointments – days, dates and time.
talk about availability ‘to get’ , ‘to receive’
give and ask for directions.
describe things being done.
talk about weather.

Hindi Elementary 3

By the end of the course you should be able to:

increase range of expression and comprehension in spoken Hindi.
take an active part in discussion in familiar contexts.
use a range of past, present and future tenses as well as conditional.
speak about health matters.
use obligation expressions.
say ‘should or must’
give suggestions and opinions.
add nuance to what you say.
talk about getting things done by others.
demonstrate greater facility for accessing and understanding written Hindi.
write an essay or a report passing on information.
