Transforming the Library
SOAS is transforming its Library into a 21st Century learning environment with a new reception area, group study rooms, increased seating for users & much more.
What's Happening
New Reception on Lower Ground Floor
A new reception allowing access to Archives and Special Collections and Current Periodicals is now operational on the lower ground floor of the Phillips Building.
This new reception has OPACs, copiers and a small reading room.
Signage has been installed to safely direct users to the new reception whilst by-passing all construction areas.
Levels E & F Cordoned Off
The areas of Library Levels E and F within the scope of works are now cordoned off and deemed a construction site.
These areas of Library Levels E and F within the scope of works are now not normally accessible by staff and library users.
Vivid Construction now control these areas and no one can enter without first having attended a site induction and wear the correct PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
Some corridors that are within the construction area are not cordoned off. This is to keep access open to areas such as the Archives, Special Collections and Mobile Shelving and to the Prayer Room.
Noisy Works
Agreement has been reached to contain most noisy work to the hours between 0700 and 1000.
The builder's main focus will be on refurbishing the early handover spaces first. These are the rooms required for teaching, etc., in the new school year.
