Interests / Disciplines

My research interests include the social, cultural, and intellectual history of Buddhist South East Asia, warfare in non-Western societies, and transport and information technology in colonial South East Asia. My diversity of research interests probably owes much to the diversity of my postgraduate education, including M.A. degrees in Asian Studies at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) and Asian History at Ohio University (Athens) and a PhD in History from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), and my exposure to great, dynamic, and interesting supervisors and instructors. My three monographs include, most recently, Southeast Asian Warfare, 1300-1900 (2004), Powerful Learning: Buddhist Literati and the Throne in Burma's Last Dynasty, 1752-1885 (2006), and A History of Modern Burma (2009), but I also have three co-edited volumes related to migration, education in Asia, and Overseas Chinese communities. I'm currently working on the history of railways, mainly in Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, India, and Sri Lanka. Simultaneously, I am turning my dissertation from Ann Arbor into a book.
