Biography
Dr. Makeen Makeen specialises in intellectual property law. Before joining the School of law at SOAS, he practised as an advocate, focusing on information technology law, intellectual property law and international construction arbitration.
He obtained his LLB from Ain Shams University in Egypt, followed by an LLM and PhD from King’s College London, where he currently holds the position of Visiting Professor. His contributions to legal education extend globally, having taught as a visiting lecturer at institutions such as Pepperdine School of Law, Turin Law School, Notre Dame Law School, and the Judicial Academy of Abu Dhabi.
His academic work has earned international recognition, particularly in the field of comparative copyright law. His work spans both civil and common law traditions and addresses legal issues pertinent to jurisdictions in developed and developing worlds. Dr. Makeen's scholarship has been cited favourably by national courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada. His seminal book, Copyright in a Global Information Society: The Scope of Copyright Protection Under International, US, UK and French Law is considered a groundbreaking contribution to comparative copyright and authors’ rights law.
In 2008, he received the prestigious Seton Award for the best article published in the Journal of the Copyright Society of the USA by an author under forty. He has also served as a peer reviewer for several leading legal periodicals.
As a former member of the Legal Standing Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), Dr. Makeen provided advice to the Executive Board and member nations on intellectual property and information technology matters. Dedicated to judicial capacity-building, he has trained judges in the United Arab Emirates and Ukraine on adjudicating intellectual property disputes.
