Biography

Zhaoxia Pang received her MA in Applied Linguistics from PLA Luoyang Foreign Languages University in 1991 (China). In 1996, sponsored by a Chevening Scholarship, she gained a second M.A. in Diplomatic Studies from the University of Westminster (UK).

In the 1990s, she worked as a senior translator/interpreter and proof-reader for a government body in China with many translated articles published in magazines and newspapers.

In 2002 she started teaching Mandarin Chinese at universities in the UK. Apart from teaching, she actively engaged in projects of developing teaching materials, some funded by the universities where she worked, including Imperial College, the London School of Economics, and SOAS. The teaching materials, ranging from beginner to advanced levels written by her at SOAS were used for many years as textbooks for SOAS BA in Chinese programme.

In 2021, with co-author Ruth Herd she wrote Complete Mandarin Chinese, a textbook covering CEFR A1 till CEFR B2 published by Hodder & Stoughton Ltd.

In 2026, she translated a story book written by Olly Richards Short Stories for Mandarin Chinese Learners, to be published by John Murray Press (forthcoming in Aug 2026).

Since 2009, Zhaoxia Pang has been actively engaged in coaching SOAS contestants in the annual Chinese Bridge Competition with excellent results, including 4 Grand-prize winners.
