Biography

Dr Amal Al-Jubouri is a distinguished poet, human rights lawyer, and academic specializing in Arabic and Islamic studies, cultural memory, and interfaith dialogue.

She has authored 14 books, including seven poetry collections, with her work translated into over 12 languages. Her renowned collection, Hagar Before The Occupation, Hagar After The Occupation (2011), received the Chomsky Prize for Translation and was shortlisted for the PEN Award for Best Translated Literature.

Currently serving as a Research Fellow at SOAS (2024–2027), Dr. Al-Jubouri is developing an academic program on the history and culture of Jews from Arab and Islamic countries. Her PhD at SOAS explored memory, identity, migration, and the Iraqi Jewish diaspora, and she is preparing it for publication under the title Iraqi Jews: Memory, Identity, and Citizenship (1951–2022). She has also taught MA courses on Cultural Intelligence and Global Business Communication at SOAS.

Beyond academia, Dr Al-Jubouri has played a significant role in international cultural diplomacy. She has served as Cultural and Tourism Counselor at the Yemeni Embassy in Berlin (2000–2011) and has founded and led several non-profit organizations, including the Arab Human Rights Academy (London) and Ost-Westlicher Diwan. A sought-after speaker, she has lectured at prestigious institutions, including Oxford, Cambridge, Georgetown, and George Washington University.

Her contributions extend to journalism and publishing, having founded Diwan, the first Arab-German cultural magazine, and Soutuna, a citizen journalism platform. She continues to bridge cultures through her literary, academic, and human rights endeavors, promoting dialogue, historical reconciliation, and intercultural understanding.

Key publications

New publication

  • Amalism: Hope as a Philosophy of Life (RN Publications, London, UK).  This book emerges from the depths of Al-Jubouri’s archives — a tapestry of paintings, portraits, and sketches that embody resilience, beauty, and humanity. These visual narratives are not merely artistic expressions; they serve as echoes of history, culture, and the relentless pursuit of hope (Amal, أمل). Rooted in the Arabic meaning of my name, "Hope," Amalism extends beyond personal identity, transforming into a philosophical ethos — a call to action and reflection. It presents hope as a guiding force for preserving our world and safeguarding the essence of our shared humanity.
  • Sanitation, Culture, and Civilization in the Arab World East: A Historical and Ecological Reflection (2024, SOAS, Online Publication)

Forthcoming Publication – 2025-2026

  • Iraqi Jews: Minority Religions of the Middle East (2026, Bloomsbury)
  • The Shabak Religious Community in Iraq (2026, Bloomsbury)
  • Avi Shlaim: The Icon of Conscience and the True Historian (2025)
