We are committed to upholding freedom of speech and academic freedom at SOAS. Our community prides itself on its plurality and values academic freedom and intellectual integrity.

We defend the right of our academics to present their research and views according to these principles, and will welcome a range of perspectives, even if these perspectives are controversial.

Our primary purpose as a university is to ensure we provide an environment for debates and discussions – hosting a range of views that can be voiced and discussed with respect – that our community of staff and students are free to pursue academic inquiry.

Events at SOAS

If you wish to hold an event with external speakers at SOAS, visit our Procedure for booking external events and conduct.

SOAS is home to a range of views which are sometimes expressed in the form of protest. Protest and dissent can take place at SOAS as long as it remains peaceful and does not undermine the safety and security of all within our community.
