Mature students

Students over 21

Around 15% of the undergraduate SOAS community are over 21 when they begin their studies at SOAS.

We work with mature students completing Access to Higher Education Diplomas as well as supporting mature students with the transition to university and during their time at SOAS.

Access conference

Access Conferences are one day conferences for students studying for an Access to Higher Education diploma.

Each conference focuses on cross-curriculum intervention and sharing, with the aim of showing a clear transition into Higher Education, and supporting this transition.

Students spend time on campus, attend lectures, take part in study skills workshops, and work with current SOAS students who previously studied Access to higher education diplomas.

The Access conference provides insight in to degree-level teaching and learning.

Mentoring

The APSS team can arrange for SOAS students to provide academic support on a sustained basis to students currently on Access to Higher Education courses in relevant subject areas.

Mentoring can be offered on a short-term intensive basis, or on a more sustained timeline, and can be subject-specific or focussed on general study skills and applying to university.

If you are an Access student or course tutor interested in mentoring, enquiries should be directed to apss@soas.ac.uk.

Student Success Conference

We offer a Student Success Conference for undergraduate mature students or who are part of the first generation in their family to attend university.

The conference takes place just before the start of your degree and aims to equip participants with the skills for success to make a flying start at SOAS in recognition that students from these backgrounds may have had less access to informal networks of advice and guidance that can support with the transition to university.

The conference includes the opportunity to attend lectures, experience collaborative student learning, academic skills sessions, careers workshops and more!
