Course overview

This is a 3-week academic English course for students from pre-intermediate level and upwards. 

It focusses on strengthening the main English language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) within a university context. Students will also expand both general and academic vocabulary, as well as developing greater confidence in communicating effectively in English in the classroom.

Classes take place everyday from Monday - Friday, and are led by two English for Academic Purposes specialists who target literacy (reading and writing) and oracy (listening and speaking).

Who should apply

This course would be particularly beneficial for students currently taking degrees in their home countries, in addition to those thinking about future university study in the UK.

Entry recommendations

To get the most from the course we recommend that students have at least a pre-intermediate level of English, i.e. IELTS 4.5 overall or equivalent.

Key skills

Key skills taught will include:

  • The basic structure and style of an academic essay.
  • How to read texts more quickly and more critically, and how to use their ideas in written and oral arguments.
  • What to listen out for in lectures and how to take more effective notes.
  • How to participate more confidently in group discussion work.
  • Improving accuracy in speaking and writing.
  • Using a wider range of vocabulary to express your views more clearly.
  • Giving formal presentations

Teaching and learning

This is a full-time course with classes every morning and afternoon, delivered by two specialists in English for Academic Purposes.

Students can expect to strengthen reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in an academic context, as well as expanding vocabulary and developing confidence in communicating more complex ideas.

The maximum number of students per class is 15.

You will receive a certificate for successful course completion.

Students will also have access to SOAS library including our wide range of e-books and e-journals.

Fees

  • 3 weeks (1 block): £2,200 GBP
  • 6 weeks (2 blocks): £3,960 GBP (save £440*)
  • 9 weeks (3 blocks): £5,940 GBP (save £600*)

*Compared to the cost of multiple individual blocks. The reduced fees for multiple blocks above are available for 2 or 3 blocks booked at the same time.
