About this event

Immerse yourself in the rich world of Afro-Peruvian music and dance through this engaging masterclass that blends zapateo (percussive dance) with traditional Afro-Peruvian percussion. Rooted in the African diaspora of Peru’s coastal regions, these art forms embody rhythm as both creative expression and cultural resistance.

Participants will explore the powerful, foot-driven rhythms of zapateo, where dancers become musicians through heels, soles, and body percussion. The session highlights contrapunto—a playful, improvisational rhythmic dialogue—and introduces techniques such as pasadas (footwork patterns), often performed in conversation with the criollo guitar.

The percussion segment will introduce key instruments like the cajón (box drum), cajita (small box), and quijada (donkey jawbone)—many with origins in adapted household items. Participants will learn core rhythms from styles such as festejo, landó, panalivio, and zamacueca, while gaining deeper insight into the history and cultural context of Afro-Peruvian traditions.

Led by Freddy Lobatón, a master artist from Peru with decades of international experience, this masterclass is open to all levels and backgrounds. It’s a unique opportunity to connect with Afro-Peruvian rhythm as a living, evolving tradition that bridges music, movement, and cultural memory.
