About this event

As the Dalai Lama turns 90, the question of his reincarnation is no longer merely spiritual—it is also a major geopolitical issue.

The legal dimension to the management of his reincarnation also matters. This seminar sets out the legality behind the tradition of the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, examining whether China's efforts to control the institution of the Dalai Lama meet the legal tradition of Tibet and if these efforts aim to expand Chinese influence over the Himalayan region, from Tibet to Mongolia and Russia. What are the geopolitical stakes and the broader global security implications? How should democracies respond to defend religious freedom, regional stability, and the international rules-based order?
