Biography
Yang He is a PhD candidate in Translation Studies at SOAS, University of London. Her research focuses on the translation and communication of Chinese political discourse in Japanese mainstream newspapers.
Her doctoral project, titled The Translation and Representation of Xi Jinping Era Chinese Political Discourse: A Study of Japanese Newspaper Coverage (2017–2020), examines how key Chinese political narratives are selectively translated and reframed in Japanese news reporting.
Before starting her PhD, Yang completed her undergraduate studies in Japanese at Harbin Institute of Technology, China, and later received a master’s degree in Japanese Translation and Interpreting from Nankai University, China. This academic background has enabled her to develop a strong command of Japanese as well as a solid foundation in translation. Fluent in Chinese, Japanese, and English, she is well positioned for cross-cultural translation research and able to approach discourse transfer and cultural negotiation from a multilingual perspective.
In addition to traditional print media, Yang is also interested in political translation and political communication in digital media. She focuses on how political discourse circulates across different media environments and how translation shapes narrative formation and public understanding in cross-linguistic communication.
Beyond her academic research, Yang also works as a freelance translator. The combination of research and practice allows her to engage more closely with real-world language use and to better understand the role of translation in public communication. These practical experiences continue to enrich her academic perspective and help her build stronger connections between theoretical analysis and real-world materials.
Her research interests include news translation, critical discourse analysis, media studies, and cross-cultural political communication in the East Asian context.
