Papers, 1965-2003, of Lionel Caplan, Professor of Anthropology, arising from four principal studies – firstly of relations between high Hindu castes and an indigenous 'tribal' population in east Nepal; secondly, a district capital and its environs in west Nepal; Thirdly the growth of 'fundamentalism' in the Christian community of urban south India; and fourthly the contemporary world of a 'mixed-race' Anglo-Indian population as this has been shaped by colonial and postcolonial circumstances. Comprises field notes, comprehensive census data, questionnaires, genealogical charts, and extensive details on economic, kinship, ritual and other everyday activities concerning the subjects of research. Additional papers relate to the study of Nepalese 'Gurkhas' and how they are imagined in the West.

CAPLAN, PATRICIA

MS 381062 . Papers, 1969-1980, of Patricia Caplan, Professor of Anthropology. Relating to fieldwork on inter-caste relations, land tenure, migration to India by low castes and new source of cash income in the Far Western Hills of Nepal in 1969, as well as material relating to the subsequent publication of books and articles based on the fieldwork.

CARPENTER, JOHN BAKER

CHINA ASSOCIATION

CHAS The China Association was founded in 1889 to represent the interests of those concerned with trade to China, Hong Kong and Japan. The archives comprise minutes, annual reports, correspondence and papers dated 1889-1969. Deposited in 1978. 116 files and volumes. (Certain documents, dated 1948-1951, have been retained by the Association but these can be consulted, by appointment, at the China Association). Handlist.

CHINA INLAND MISSION (OVERSEAS MISSIONARY FELLOWSHIP)

CIM Minutes, 1872 to 1951, of the London Council of the China Inland Mission and of its Finance Committee; Minutes, 1886-1947 and 1951, of the mission's China Council; Registers of missionaries, some correspondence, private papers and various publications including Chinese Missionary Gleaner 1853-1959 and China's Millions 1875-1964. In addition there is a large photographic collection. In a separate section are the substantial papers of the mission's founder, James Hudson Taylor (1832-1905) which include some records c.1850-60 of the Chinese Evangelization Society. Also, four boxes relating to the Chefoo Schools, founded by Hudson Taylor, including registers of pupils. 161 boxes, 394 volumes. CHRISTIAN AID

CA Christian Aid was founded by British Churches in 1946 when it was primarily concerned with the work of reconstruction in Europe. It subsequently developed a worldwide mandate and came to be known as the Department of Inter-Church Aid and Refugee Service of the British Council of Churches. In 1964 the agency changed its name to Christian Aid. Records comprise correspondence, minutes and reports, dating 1946-1985, concerning aid projects in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. 508 boxes. Handlists.

CHRISTIAN CONCERN FOR SOUTHERN AFRICA

CCSA Correspondence, papers, publications and reports, dated 1966-1993, of Christian Concern for Southern Africa, an organisation formed in the early 1970s to co-ordinate response of the Churches in the United Kingdom to the political situation in South Africa. CCSA wound down its activities in 1992. 32 boxes. Handlist.

COATES, PATRICK DEVEREUX

PP MS 52 Papers, correspondence and research notes created by Patrick Devereux Coates (1916-1991), whilst writing The China Consuls: British Consular Officers 1843-1943, published by Oxford University Press in 1988. COUSINS, (ETHEL) CONSTANCE

MS 380325 Letters and papers concerning the life of Constance Cousins (1882-1944). Worked with the Church of Scotland's medical mission at Kalimpong and Almora, 1911-1944; went to Bhutan, 1911 to help combat a cholera epidemic there. The collection also includes letters, dated 1893-1900, from her father the Revd. W.C. Cousins, missionary in Madagascar from 1862 to 1899. 4 boxes. Handlist.

CRABTREE, WILLIAM ARTHUR

MS 380335 Material collected by William Arthur Crabtree. Worked as a Missionary for the Church Missionary Society in Uganda 1892-1906. Card index of English/Bantu and Bantu/English vocabularies, incorporating 13 different Bantu languages, and symbols relating their hypothetical common roots, with some tentative conclusions about Bantu origins, together with material on Luganda and Kavirondo. 2 boxes. CROMWELL, TOM PEARSON

PP MS 33 Personal correspondence, dated 1926 to 1946, together with some papers, of Tom Pearson Cromwell (born 1909). Cromwell joined the Colonial Administrative Service in 1932, serving in Malaya and was interned from 1942 to 1945. After the war he became Assistant Secretary for Chinese Affairs in Sarawak and Director of Social Welfare in Singapore from 1953 to 1957. 12 boxes. Handlist.
