Course overview

Following Turkish Elementary, the aim of this course is to provide the learners with a deeper knowledge about Turkish language and the culture as well as to enable the learners to communicate in Turkish confidently and fluently in more complex situations. This course is delivered by the Language Centre

Method

The course is taught in English and Turkish, and a variety of materials and sources are provided by the teacher. The lessons are recorded and all the teaching materials and some extracurricular materials are regularly put on Moodle to reinforce the learners’ learning process and help them catch up if need be.

The course begins by revising what has been covered in the Beginner and Elementary levels with mechanical and communicative activities. Then it continues to cover more complex structures and lexical items from a variety of contexts. It aims to ensure the learners speak more fluently and confidently by actively participating in conversations as well as expressing opinions on a wider range of topics through ice breakers and warmers, role plays, class interviews and chain drills. For listening, the learners are encouraged to listen to each other, as well as the teacher, and a variety of listening materials are used inside and outside of the class such as short stories, songs, dialogues and short videos from Turkish films/series. The learners further improve their reading skills by being exposed to longer texts with more complex structures and vocabulary. As for writing, the learners are encouraged to use the reading texts as a model and create different types of writings such as their short biography, diary entries, poems, letters/emails, a personal family history and folk legends.

In class, the learners are encouraged to interact with each other using Turkish, practicing the structure and lexical items learnt in pairs or in small groups. Outside the class, learners are encouraged to revise what has been taught, complete homework and watch videos and films, read books, or listen to music in Turkish to make sure their exposure to the language and culture continues.

This will be achieved through 20 hours of blended learning: this is composed of 15 hours of online structured lessons with the teacher. This is supplemented by a minimum of 5 hours guided independent learning supported by complementary material. The course objective will be achieved within the 10-week course.

At the end of the course, there is a revision and consolidation. There is no formal assessment, but an informal evaluation of the learners’ levels is done through in-class participation and homework checked by the teacher.
