Terms and conditions for group courses
Language Centre terms and conditions
Course Fees
Fees for academic year 2026-2027 are effective from 1 August 2026 and are payable in advance of the start of the course. Fees for all courses are exclusive of course materials.
- Please visit course fees to view the full list of discounts on offer.
- The Language Centre does not offer concessionary discounts for those on government benefits.
- You must email or show your student card to one of our administrators to qualify for the discount.
- Discounts must be claimed at the time of enrolment and cannot be applied retrospectively.
Recording of online classes
Online classes may be recorded for use as a learning resource. SOAS has a legitimate interest in recording classes to maximise the resources available to support students’ learning and instruction. The recordings will be available to students enrolled in the class. We will retain the recordings until the end of the academic year. By enrolling for a SOAS Language Centre course, you agree to the recording of online classes.
Online course requirements
Online courses will be delivered via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. SOAS LC does not take responsibility for individual technical issues not related to SOAS.
Withdrawal from courses
We strongly advise you to ensure that you will be able to attend for the whole of the course before enrolling. SOAS Language Centre cannot accept any responsibility for unforeseen changes in students’ circumstances that may prevent their attendance for all or part of a course.
No refunds can be given for classes not attended, unless non-attendance relates to a class rescheduled to a different day by the SOAS Language Centre.
You have a legal right to cancel your course provided that you do so within 14 days of the date on which you purchased your course (the Cancellation Period). The date you purchased your course is the date of your contract with us. To cancel your contract with us, you must clearly inform us in writing of your decision to cancel and that cancellation must reach us before the Cancellation Period has expired. You can do this by:
- contacting the relevant language inbox via email. See Contact Us
- using the Cancellation Form (MS Word Form) and emailing it to the relevant language inbox via email. See Contact Us
If you have cancelled your contract with us within the Cancellation Period by informing us as above and you have not received any teaching of the course, you will be eligible for a full refund of the course fees you have paid and you will not incur any other fees, (such as administrative fees) as a result of the refund (except for exchange rate differences).
After the start of the first lesson of your course, whether you attend the first lesson or not, you will be considered to have used the SOAS Language Centre’s teaching, and no refunds will be payable to you.
Refunds will be returned in the same way as the payment was made. Please note the refund procedure may take up to 14 days.
Quorum requirements
Our courses are subject to quorum requirements. Classes are typically between 10 and 14 students, the maximum is 20.
If a scheduled course does not reach the quorum number, the course may be cancelled. Language Centre Administrators will inform applicants, normally 5 days before the start of the course, and advise them as to alternative options.
Corporate payments
If an invoice is required, sponsors must contact the relevant language inbox, see Contact Us, to request the Invoice Details Form. This should be completed and submitted by email. Once you have received a confirmation of receipt of the Form, the student can be enrolled onto the course. Discounts do not apply to corporate invoice payments.
Please ensure that the purchase order accompanies the confirmation.
Failure to pay may result in withdrawal of the student from the course and/or the student becoming liable for payment immediately.
General
- If a class (on campus or online) is postponed or disrupted for any reason (including, but not limited to, teacher illness, personal circumstances, transport issues, network outages), the teacher will arrange a replacement lesson by extending the end date by a week unless a different date is mutually agreed upon by all the students and the teacher.
- Should we need to suspend on-campus teaching to ensure the health and safety of our campus community, the University will continue to deliver language courses by moving them temporarily online.
- If a teacher, for any unavoidable reason, cannot teach the rest of the course, we will aim to replace that teacher as soon as possible in order to minimise disruption to the class.
- We strongly advise you to enrol as soon as possible before the start date as places are allocated on a ‘first come’ basis. Places cannot be reserved in advance without payment.
- Students may request a Certificate of Attendance for a course, provided they have at least 70% attendance.
- Classes are only for learners aged 18 and above.
