Biography

Adria Rius is a Lecturer in Economics at the SOAS Department of Economics.

Adria’s research focuses on the challenges and opportunities associated with industrial restructuring, policy, and development. He draws on diverse traditions in economics such as evolutionary, institutional, and micro-structural theories of production to analyse how organisations build capabilities and engage in processes of value creation and value capture. His work also explores the role of, and interplay between, firms and the state, and the political economy thereof.

In his research, Adria engages with quantitative and qualitative methods, with a particular interest in complex systems perspectives. Related research areas of interest include economic geography, development finance, and competition policy.

Adria has worked for the ILO Green Jobs Programme and for the Somaliland Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Tourism. He was also Research Fellow at the SOAS Centre for Sustainable Structural Transformation, where he remains affiliated. Adria obtained his PhD in Development Economics from SOAS, funded by the ESRC (UKRI). He conducted the first year of his PhD at the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose and visited at Orkestra-University of Deusto.
