Biography

Aydin is a historian of the Early Modern Ottoman world, specialising in the intersection of architectural form and cultural history. He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief for Issue 18 of the SOAS Journal of Postgraduate Research.

His academic trajectory has been defined by a multidisciplinary approach, earning a BA in Archaeology, an MA in Early Modern History at the University of Sheffield, and a further MA in Middle Eastern Studies at SOAS.

Through extensive linguistic training and research at SOAS, he is in the process of refining a specialised methodology for analysing Ottoman water architecture within Early Modern urban environments. His research focuses on how monumental and civic architecture - specifically Ottoman fountains - serves as a primary source for understanding social hierarchy, aesthetics, and linguistic intricacies in the Early Modern period.

Beyond his research, Aydin is an active member of the SOAS community. In addition to his current position as Editor-in-Chief, he previously volunteered as a Content Editor for the journal’s 17th issue and assisted fellow students as a Peer Mentor. He also served as both Department and Course Representative during his MA.
