Biography

Bárbara Araújo Machado is a Research Associate at the School of History, Religions and Philosophies at SOAS University of London.

She is also a Lecturer of History at Fernando Rodrigues da Silveira Institute, which is part of Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ), in Brazil.

She holds a PhD in History from Fluminense Federal University (UFF), where her research examined the making of the Brazilian Black Women’s Movement between 1978 and 2000. Her thesis was later published as a book in Brazil.

At SOAS, she is conducting a comparative study of Brazilian and British Black feminisms, particularly examining how Black feminist intellectuals and activists have interpreted colonialism, slavery, and imperialism across Afro-Atlantic contexts. Her current project is inspired by Lélia Gonzalez’s call “for an Afro-Latin American feminism” and seeks to contribute to the development of an Afro-Atlantic feminist framework through a dialogue between Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Caribbean/British feminist traditions.

Alongside her academic research, Bárbara works on teacher training and History teaching in Brazil, supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students and participating in public engagement initiatives related to race, gender, education and feminism. She has published articles, book chapters, and books in the fields of History, Black Feminism, Social Theory, and History Education.
