Meet the Queer Society: SOAS Spotlight

A spotlight on the SOAS Queer Society, a welcoming space for queer students and allies to connect, celebrate, and build community at the university.
University should be a place where everyone feels at home - but for many queer students, that sense of belonging isn’t always easy to find. That’s why we created Queer Society: to build a community where everyone can feel safe, celebrated, and connected.
Why the Queer Society was created
Our society was born out of a shared need for connection and belonging. Founded by students who felt the absence of a vibrant queer community on campus, we came together to create a space where everyone could feel seen, heard, and celebrated. As we all know, university can be very isolating at times, especially for queer students, who may struggle to feel fully accepted on campus.
The main goal of our society is to help queer students find each other and to help them feel like they really belong on our campus. Whether you’re out and proud, questioning, or an ally, our society is here to welcome you with open arms. Together, we’re building a university where everyone can thrive as their authentic selves.
We host events to build community
We organise events as a society at least once a week. Every Thursday, we have our coffee ‘morning’ (starts around the student-friendly time of 2 pm), where members of the queer community, as well as allies, can meet and bond over a cup of coffee and amazing homemade cakes.
We normally do arts and crafts as well during this, like lino printing on t-shirts or learning how to crochet. These few hours every Thursday provide a much-needed safe space for members of the community, helping get rid of any feelings of isolation as well as creating a time when they can truly be themselves.
Whether you’re looking for friendship, support, or just a place to feel seen, we’re here for you.
Apart from this, we also host more lively events. Our regular karaoke nights on Mondays are always a big hit. We are also planning a few other events during Queer History Month, like a zine workshop in collaboration with the Feminist Society and Art Society. We are also going to be collaborating with the Film Society for a screening of ‘Paris is Burning’, followed by a social in the bar afterwards. In the future, we also aim to have more events dedicated to specific groups of people; for example, we had a Sapphic Monday event recently, which was a great success.
Be part of the SOAS Queer Society
Our society is more than just a group - it’s a family. Whether you’re looking for friendship, support, or just a place to feel seen, we’re here for you. Come to our events, share your ideas, and help us grow. Together, we can create a campus where everyone feels like they belong.
Queer joy is resistance, and we’re here to celebrate it every step of the way. See you at our next event! Follow @soasqueersoc on Instagram to find out about their events.
