Results Day didn't go to plan? Here's how SOAS Clearing works
Marjaan shares her tips on what to do if A-level Results Day doesn’t go quite as planned — and how Clearing can help you find your next step.
A-level Results Day can be a stressful one. You might not get the grades you were expecting, find out that your firm choice hasn’t accepted you, or even do better than expected and decide that you want to explore your options.
If that happens, don’t panic — Clearing can give you another route to university.
I remember how overwhelming it can feel when you have spent months working towards one outcome and suddenly find yourself having to consider a different plan. The most important thing is to stay calm, know your options and act quickly.
Clearing allows you to apply for university courses that still have places available. You can apply on Results Day itself and, depending on availability, for a week or two afterwards.
What to have ready before Results Day
I would recommend preparing everything you need in advance so that you are not trying to find information while dealing with your results.
- · Your shortlist of universities and courses
- · The Clearing contact number for each university
- · Your UCAS ID number
- · Your results and any other relevant qualifications
It is also worth deciding what course you actually want to study before you call. You will generally only be able to discuss one application at a time, so having the exact course details ready will make the process much easier.
Calling a university through Clearing
Once you have your results, call the university you are interested in.
They will usually ask:
- · Which course you are interested in
- · What grades you have achieved
- · Your UCAS ID number
- · For some personal details if you meet the requirements
If you do not meet the requirements for your first choice, don’t assume that means your options have run out. The university may suggest another course that could be suitable, or you can move on to the next university on your list.
Once you receive an offer
Keep checking your emails after your call. The university may contact you for additional information or send you an offer.
If you receive an offer, you will need to add it to your UCAS application to finalise it.
Most importantly, don’t leave it until later in the day if you already know what you want. Clearing places can fill quickly, so being prepared means you can act as soon as you have your results.
And remember, taking a different route does not mean you have failed. Sometimes your route to university looks different from the one you originally imagined — and that is completely okay.
