Economic Statecraft and Geo-Politics (Economics) Competition in mainland Southeast Asia

Biography

Borinot Taychamekiatchai is a MPhil/PhD student at the department of Politics and International Studies, SOAS, University of London. His research focuses on the intersection of geoeconomics, international development, and economic policymaking in the Mekong sub-region.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Thammasat University, Thailand, an MA in Political Economy, and an MRES in Economics, both from the University of Essex, UK. He has developed strong foundations in advanced economic analysis, quantitative research, and interdisciplinary approaches to political economy since studying at Thammasat University.

Borinot’s doctoral research investigates how nations in Southeast Asia can design resilient economic and foreign policies amid the intensifying of geoeconomic and geopolitical competition between the United States and its allies and China. His work will examine the strategic use of economic statecraft, the vulnerabilities of small and middle powers in contested economic environments, and how regional governments can avoid excessive dependence on any major power bloc. By combining qualitative political analysis with quantitative economic tools, his research aims to generate policy-relevant insights that contribute to both scholarly understanding and practical policy design.

Borinot is fluent in Thai and English with substantial academic writing experience. He has authored research proposals, literature reviews, and policy-oriented analyses in both languages. His academic interests lie in geoeconomics, international political economy, Southeast Asian development and macroeconomic policy, and the strategic implications of great-power rivalry on smaller states.  Borinot’s long-term goal is to contribute to high-quality scholarship and evidence-based policymaking in Southeast Asia. Through his doctoral work and broader academic activities, he seeks to advance understanding of how regional states can maintain strategic autonomy and pursue sustainable economic development in an increasingly complex and contested international environment.
