Biography
Dr Chanhee Lee is a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the Centre of Korean Studies, SOAS University of London.
Her research primarily employs emotions as a central lens for examining historical sources, with a regional focus on Korea.
Her doctoral thesis explores Koreans’ emotions and their expressions towards modern society in the late nineteenth century. Drawing on travelogues, she argues that the emotions of Korean travellers were not merely passive responses to foreign pressures or prevailing conditions, but a dynamic site of engagement and negotiation between social norms and individual agency.
Building on the methodological framework of her doctoral research, she is currently developing a project on the emotional legacies of colonial modernisation. Bridging her background in medical science, history, and Korean Studies, her work aims to understand contemporary mental health challenges from a historical perspective.
