Department of Gender Studies
About
The Department of Gender Studies at SOAS is an interdisciplinary space promoting research and teaching on gender and sexuality with particular reference to Asia, Africa, the Middle East and their diasporas.
Building on the work of our precursor, the Centre for Gender Studies, we at the Department place radical social transformation at the centre of our teaching and research, bringing together transnational, decolonial, abolitionist, and intersectional approaches to engage with urgent struggles of our time: border abolition, decolonial liberation, anti-racism, queer and trans feminisms, and resistance to the rise of the global right.
In doing so, Gender Studies affirms one of SOAS’s singular strengths: a refusal to shy away from critical world-making, even when such work is feared, repressed or attacked.
