About this event
In the final Indian Art Circle lecture for 2024/25, Dr Sushma Jansari (Tabor Foundation Curator: South Asia, The British Museum) will discuss the context, scope, themes and highlights of this major current exhibition at the British Museum, on the origins of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain sacred art.
The British Museum’s new colourful, multi-sensory and atmospheric exhibition reaches back more than 2,000 years to explore the origins of Hindu, Jain and Buddhist sacred art in the ancient and powerful nature spirits of India, and the spread of this art beyond the subcontinent.
One of the first major exhibitions in the world to look at the early devotional art of India from a multi-faith, contemporary and global perspective, this lecture will highlight the inspiration behind now-familiar depictions of the deities and enlightened teachers of these world religions. It will also discuss the community collaboration that is at the heart of this exhibition.
