About this event
This book is the first of its kind to discover the first Korean immigrant in Australia and systematically analyse causes of Korean youth migration to Australia since the late 19th century.
It offers a comprehensive history of 150 years’ people-to-people relations,long before the establishment of official bilateral relations between Australia and South Korea in 1961. It does so by categorically analysing politico-economic factors of youth migration from the seven pillars of human security perspective. Each chapter begins with an individual story of youth migration to Australia from 1876 until today. They include a shearer and miner in Gol Gol, an international student in Melbourne, a former mascot boy for Australian soldiers, and holiday makers in Warrnambool. The volume provides stimulating content for researchers in youth labour migration history, Asian/Australian Studies and people-centric international relations.

About the speaker
Jay Song
The author, Jay Song (송지영) is honorary associate professor at the Australian National University. Prior to her current affiliation, she was Korea Foundation associate professor at the University of Melbourne to set up the Korean Studies programme and the Korean Studies Research Hub (2017-2023). Besides her academic career, she also held various positions in government, think tanks and the UN in Seoul, London, Sydney and Geneva. She’s now based in Murrumbateman, rural New South Wales, Australia, raising alpacas and writing about Asian migration and race issues in Australia.
