About this event
13 October, 16:00-17:30 (G52) Roundtable discussion and musical demonstration
Leading Uyghur and Uzbek musicians Abror Zufarov and Saniyam Ismail in conversation with project researchers Professor Rachel Harris and Dr Mukaddas Mijit introduce the cross-border collaboration and discuss the underpinning research and process of bringing the project to life.
Free and open to all.
14 October, 19:30 (Brunei Gallery, SOAS): Concert
This concert reunites musicians across the Soviet-Chinese divide through an original exploration of the stunning maqām-based classical repertoire of the Central Asian Uzbek and Uyghur peoples. Vocalists Abror Zufarov and Saniyem Ismail draw on the musical and poetic connections that have been deeply submerged by the forces of 20th-century nationalism to create an inspiring original concert repertoire.
