About this event

Join us for a critical discussion in Westminster on the UK government's increasing use of proscription powers and how these measures may be infringing on free speech and civil liberties.

This event will bring together legal experts, civil rights advocates, and political commentators to explore the implications of criminalising association and expression under the guise of security. What are the consequences for activism, dissent, and democratic engagement? Who decides what constitutes a ‘threat’? Is there also a fine line between safety and suppression?

Panellists:

Prof Conor Gearty (Professor of Human Rights Law, LSE & author of Homeland Insecurity: The Rise and Rise of Global Anti-Terrorism Law)

Suresh Grover (Founder, Southall Monitoring Group)

Jonathan Hall KC (Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation)

Audrey Mogan (Criminal Defence & Human Rights Barrister, Garden Court Chambers)

Chair: Dr Daniella Lock (Lecturer in Law, King's College London)

Host: John McDonnell, Independent MP for Hayes and Harlington
