About this event

Join SOAS experts as they explore how sustainability and climate change are reshaping societies, laws and development pathways and why these challenges matter for your future studies and the world you will help shape.

As the impacts of climate change intensify, questions of environmental justice, sustainability and responsibility have never been more urgent. From climate governance and environmental law to lived experiences of ecological change and sustainable development, societies around the world are grappling with how to respond to an increasingly unstable climate.

This session brings together SOAS perspectives to examine climate change not only as an environmental crisis, but as a deeply social, legal and political issue. Drawing on insights from development studies, law, anthropology and sociology, the panel will explore how climate change shapes societies, how different communities experience and respond to environmental change, and what sustainable futures might look like in practice.

What we will explore

  • How climate change is reshaping societies, livelihoods and inequalities across different regions of the world.
  • The role of environmental and climate change law in responding to ecological crisis and holding actors accountable.
  • How social, cultural and anthropological perspectives help us understand human relationships with the environment.
  • Competing ideas of sustainability and development, and the challenges of achieving more just and equitable outcomes.
  • Why interdisciplinary approaches are essential for addressing climate change and building sustainable futures.
