We are pleased to welcome you to the inaugural Distinguished Lecture Series for the SOAS-Alphawood Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Art.
Speaker, Professor Robert Hillenbrand, F.B.A., F.R.S.E., will present: ‘Creating spirituality in Islamic painting: the Muhammad cycle in the Edinburgh World History of Rashid al-Din’. A leading scholar in Islamic art, Professor Hillenbrand will explore the spiritual dimensions of one of the most significant illustrated manuscripts in Islamic history. His lecture promises to be insightful and thought-provoking.
The evening will conclude with a reception, offering the chance to connect with fellow alumni and staff from the SOAS-Alphawood Asian Art alumni network.

Meet the speaker
Professor Robert Hillenbrand, F.B.A., F.R.S.E., is a renowned scholar of Islamic art, educated at Cambridge and Oxford. He taught at the Universities of Edinburgh and St Andrews and has held visiting professorships at institutions including Princeton, UCLA, and Leiden.
His research focuses on Islamic architecture, painting, and iconography, with a special interest in Iran and early Islamic Syria. He has published extensively and curated major exhibitions, including one of the largest ever on Persian painting.
