About this event
Join us for an evening celebrating the work of SOAS’s College of Social Sciences, which brings together the Department of Development Studies, Department of Economics, the School of Finance and Management and the Department of Politics and International Studies.
The event, hosted by Professor Elisa Van Waeyenberge, Dean of the College of Social Sciences, will feature the latest news and highlights across the departments, followed by a lecture delivered by Dr Adam Hanieh titled 'The Climate Emergency, Fossil Fuels and The Middle East'.
The Middle East is among the places most threatened by the climate crisis, even as it remains at the core of the global oil and gas economy. This lecture explores that tension, tracing how ecological breakdown intersects with the region’s fossil-fuelled political economies to deepen social and political crises—from Palestine to Sudan. It asks what these shifts mean for how we study the region and for tackling the global challenges we now confront.
The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception, where you can engage in conversation with fellow alumni and staff.
