About this event
The Centre of Taiwan Studies, in collaboration with the Taiwanese Association in the UK (TAIUK), is delighted to present a screening of Invisible Nation (2023), a documentary film directed by Vanessa Hope.
Invisible Nation offers an intimate and unprecedented look into the leadership of Taiwan’s first female president, Tsai Ing-wen, and the island’s ongoing pursuit of democracy and autonomy in the face of mounting authoritarian pressure.
With rare access to Tsai and her administration, the film traces her careful navigation between the competing geopolitical powers of the United States and China, revealing the complexities of sustaining freedom and self-determination under constant external threat.
Set against the backdrop of a vibrant democratic society seeking full international recognition, Invisible Nation resonates powerfully in a global moment marked by renewed concerns over authoritarian aggression, echoing the lessons of Ukraine while foregrounding Taiwan’s own struggle for security and dignity.

Taiwanese Association in the UK
The Taiwanese Association in the UK (TAIUK) was founded in February 1995. Shortly after its founding, the TAIUK was invited by the European Federation of Taiwanese Associations (EFTA) and officially became a member in 1996.
The Taiwanese Association in the UK actively takes part in events within the Taiwanese community in the UK, promoting Taiwanese identity and culture among overseas Taiwanese and students in Britain, especially in London. It strives for democracy and freedom for Taiwan, opposes the threat of authoritarian rule, and engages with international friends who support Taiwan.
