About this event

As part of the 2025 SOAS Centre of Taiwan Studies Summer School, we are honoured to screen the award-winning film Super Citizen Ko, directed by Wan Jen, one of Taiwan’s most important social realist filmmakers.

Set against the backdrop of Taiwan’s White Terror era, the film tells the story of Xu Yisheng, a former political prisoner haunted by guilt after betraying a friend under duress. Upon release from prison after 16 years, he sets out on a deeply personal journey to seek atonement, confronting his past and the lasting trauma of political repression.

Through this poignant narrative, Super Citizen Ko confronts questions of memory, justice, and reconciliation, shedding light on Taiwan’s authoritarian past and the human cost of political violence.

The SOAS Centre of Taiwan Studies would like to thank TaiwanPlus and Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute for granting the rights of screening.
