About this event

In the 2025 Centre of Taiwan Studies Summer School, we invite you to join us for a powerful night of screenings that centre care, kinship, memory, and womanhood in everyday life.

These three films—distinct in form but deeply connected in theme—offer rare glimpses into the emotional textures of Taiwanese society.

  •  XiXi – A raw and compelling double self-portrait of two women artists, navigating the boundaries between intimacy and independence.
  •  My Homework – A student turns the camera toward her own mother, crafting a tender meditation on maternal strength, hardship, and love.
  •  Hard Good Life – A daughter films her ageing father in quiet, loving observation, showing how care dwells in the smallest gestures.

Each of these works reveals the silent strength of everyday life—of women, families, and working people whose stories often go untold. Come spend a day with us to reflect, connect, and experience these moving portraits together.

The SOAS Centre of Taiwan Studies would like to thank TaiwanPlus and Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute for granting the rights of screening.
