Join us to explore Bangladesh's political evolution since the July Uprising, analysing the changing electoral landscape, the rise of youth politics, and the potential for a transformative democratic future.

The talk will focus on the nature and dynamics of political process in Bangladesh since the July Uprising. This will include discussions of the political trajectory of the Interim Government in terms of its autonomy, legitimacy, and political capacity, the nature of the evolving electoral political landscape, the dynamics of elite circulations in the domains of the state and society, the reinvigorated political Islam, and the emergence of the new youth politics. The presentation will conclude by reflecting on the question if we are witnessing the birth of a transformative politics, which will potentially contribute to the emergence of a democratic political order in the near future.

About the speaker

Dr. Mirza Hassan is currently the Advisor, BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD), BRAC University. He has studied at University of London, UK and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. Dr. Hassan specializes in the areas of Politics and Political Economy, especially in relations to Development and Governance. He has published journal articles in peer reviewed journals in the areas of democratic transition, NGO and development, tax governance, and political economy of Covid governance. His book chapters on politics of growth and state-society relations have been published from the Oxford University Press and Routledge respectively. More recently another book chapter on political economy of banking sector governance has been published from the Oxford University Press. He is currently conducting research on youth political uprising in South Asia, oligarchy and authoritarian consolidation in Bangladesh, and politics of governance reform in Bangladesh, among other topics.
