About this event

The intersection of escalating sovereign debt and volatile climate risks has created a perfect storm for emerging and developing economies.

As these nations grapple with compounded energy shocks and the increasing frequency of climate-related disasters, the traditional financial and debt architecture is being pushed to its breaking point. This event brings together leading economists, policymakers, and civil society advocates to dissect this urgent nexus.

We will explore how high borrowing costs and the climate premium on debt are hindering the ability of vulnerable nations to invest in resilient infrastructure and a just energy transition. The discussion will pivot from identifying systemic vulnerabilities to evaluating actionable solutions, including the new Borrowers’ Platform, a UN-backed initiative that unites developing nations to tackle the rising global debt crisis. The discussion takes place while the UK Government prepares its G20 Presidency for 2027.

The programme and speakers will be announced shortly.

The event, which forms part of London Climate Action Week, is jointly organised by the SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance and UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
