About this event

Join us for a celebration of Hausa literature with Hausa novelist and poet Sa'adatu Baba Ahmad and an examination of how Nigeria's universities are building translation infrastructure.

Event series and organiser

This event is brought to you by SOAS Centre of African Studies, CAS in collaboration with the SLCL Tafsiri Research Culture Group co-led by Dr Ida Hadjivayanis and Dr Carmen McCain, and the ISPF institutional support grant (ODA). It will run both on campus and online.

It is part of several planned events this year which aim to promote Hausa language and culture and draw attention to the online Hausa language classes being offered at SOAS in collaboration with the Centre for Research in Nigerian Languages, Translation, and Folklore, at Bayero University, Kano.

About the speakers

Professor Yakubu Magaji Azare is Director of the Centre for Research in Nigerian Languages, Translation, and Folklore and Professor of Hausa Linguistics and Translation at Bayero University Kano. He edits Algaita Journal of Hausa Studies and Harsunan Nijeriya. A trained linguist, he translates Hausa, English, and Fulfulde, researching translation and language equivalence, including Hausa versions of Shakespeare. His works include Selected Writings and Speeches of Mallam Aminu Kano and Idioms in English-Hausa (Ahmadu Bello University Press). He coordinates online translation and Hausa programmes, including collaboration with SOAS University of London.

Sa’adatu Baba Ahmad is a novelist and poet with 23 novels and two poetry collections, alongside other published poems. She has written weekly columns for Albishir and Aminiya, served as a staff writer for Leadership Hausa, and edited Zuma Times and Rahotannin Gaskiya. Professionally, she is Public Relations Officer at the Kano Emirate Council and Media Adviser to the Kano Emir. Currently on leave from Skyline University Nigeria, she is pursuing a PhD at University of Bedfordshire. Nine of her books are held in the SOAS Furniss Collection.
