About this event

SOAS IAA are showcasing the 'Stories of Migration' exhibition made by PositiveNegatives and hosting Animated Learning Workshops for school students, exploring themes of migration, storytelling and art.

They will welcome local schools to the SOAS Gallery on the 27th and 28th of February to visit the exhibition and engage with interactive workshops led by the PositiveNegatives team. These workshops are a unique opportunity for students to engage with the exhibition through creative activities that bring deep learning to life.

Participants will connect key themes from the exhibition to their own experiences, using arts, philosophy, and critical pedagogy facilitated by team members of Animated Learning from PositiveNegatives and Lifeworlds Learning. Mirroring the research process behind the animations, students will be given a platform to share their voices and stories, helping them make sense of the issues in ways that feel meaningful to them.

Plus, artist Daniel Locke will lead a hands-on workshop where students will experiment with drawing, writing, and zine-making. Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with storytelling as way of exploring and understanding other lives and different situations.

About the speakers

  • Dr Benjamin Worku-Dix - Founding Director, PositiveNegatives

PositiveNegatives transform academic research into illustrated stories, making complex topics into original comics and animations. They combine ethnographic research with creative techniques to transform personal stories into art, education and advocacy materials about pressing social, humanitarian and environmental issues.

  • Rob Bowden - Director, Lifeworlds Learning
  • Rosie Wilson - Director, Lifeworlds Learning

Lifeworlds support learning communities and host shared learning spaces. They believe that transformational learning is greatly aided by becoming aware of our lifeworlds and integrate this into all professional learning opportunities whether with schools, organisations, communities or individuals.

  • Daniel Locke - Senior Artist, Positive Negatives

Daniel Locke is an artist and graphic novelist who works with social issues, communities & scientists.
