Thesis title
Migration Diplomacy Across the Mediterranean: Morocco and Algeria’s Contrasting Engagement with the European Union 

Biography

Her doctoral project examines the role of migration in diplomatic relations between Maghreb states and the European Union, with a focus on the historical development of these relations. 

The project is supported by an ESRC studentship under the UBEL Doctoral Training Programme. Johanna’s broader research interests centre around international migration, border regimes, and colonialism.  Previously, Johanna worked in migration policy and research with the Mission of Canada to the European Union, the Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs at the European Commission, the Migration Policy Institute Europe in Brussels, and as a research assistant on the EU H2020-funded SPRING project on sustainable practices of migrant integration. She currently supports the organising of the London Migration Research Group (LMRG), an inter-university and interdisciplinary network of scholars with research interests in the politics, policies and processes surrounding international migration.  

Johanna holds an MSc in Public Administration (Governance of Migration and Diversity) from Erasmus University Rotterdam and an MA in European Studies from the University of Amsterdam. She also holds a BA in Modern Languages (French and German) from the University of Oxford.
