Biography

Judith Hoppermann is a Doctoral Researcher at SOAS, University of London. Her research focuses on the politics of refugee governance in cross-border contexts with a focus on Lebanon and Türkiye. Having conducted fieldwork in Lebanon and Türkiye, she is particularly interested in the interaction of state and non-state actors. Her research has received funding from various bodies, including the Gerda Henkel Foundation, European International Studies Association, Institute of Humane Studies, and Gilbert Murray Foundation. 

She has presented her ongoing work at various national and international conferences of the American Political Science Association (APSA), British International Studies Association (BISA), the International Studies Association (ISA), IMISCOE (International Migration Research Network), the European Consortium for Political Science Research, the Middle Eastern Studies Association and several academic workshops, including the POMEPS Virtual Workshop Series. Previously, she gained experience in the development and humanitarian sector, serving as a Carlo Schmid Fellow at the World Food Progamme’s office for the Syria crisis, GIZ, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s Lebanon program and the German Permanent Mission to the UN, amongst others. 

She also covered topics around migration as a journalist at the German Press Agency (dpa) and elsewhere. Judith graduated with an M.A. in Near and Middle Eastern Studies and Arabic (with distinction) from SOAS, University of London, and a B.A. in Middle Eastern Studies and Politics (first-class honours) from Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg, Germany. During her studies, she held scholarships from Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (Journalism Track) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Judith has received additional training in qualitative research methods and attended the Institute for Multimethod and Qualitative Research (IQMR) in Syracuse, USA. In addition to German (native), Judith speaks English and French fluently and has an intermediate level of Arabic (Levantine and Fusha).
