Biography
Leif is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Centre of South East Asian Studies, SOAS University of London.
He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in English at the University of the Philippines Diliman, and his PhD in Cultural, Literary and Postcolonial Studies at SOAS, where his thesis conceptualised English as a mutable infrastructure in South East Asia, tracing its shifting roles across education, publishing, and literary writing in Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
His current research examines how colonial-era textual and bureaucratic practices shaped the infrastructural role of English in the Philippines, drawing on Philippine colonial materials and the Ifor Ball Powell Collection held in the SOAS Library Special Collections. His broader research interests include linguistic landscapes, print and book history, South East Asian popular culture, and the intersections of language with class, gender, and power in the region. His research articles have been published in Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints, Signs and Society, and Indonesia and the Malay World.
He is also Senior Lecturer in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at the University of the Philippines Diliman.
