Biography

Miriam is an artist, scenographer and educator whose practice has a strong emphasis on social and political engagement often relating to conflict and development. As an artist, she has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally. She is a team member with Art Refuge, working regularly with people in transit on the France UK border in Northern France: this collaborative work with young refugees has been shown at the Centre George Pompidou, with The Ship of Tolerance (Totally Thames Festival/ Ilya and Emilia Kabaov foundation) and in the UK. As a theatre maker, she is Creative Associate for 20 Stories High in Liverpool, works regularly with Clean Break and women with lived experience of the criminal justice system and has designed many theatre performances drawing on her expertise in post conflict settings including Afghanistan: the Great Game (Tricycle/ US tour), Palace of the End (Amnesty Freedom of Speech Award/ Royal Exchange), War Correspondents (GIF and tour) and Bang Bang Bang (Royal Court/ Out of Joint).

She spent several years setting up psychosocial programmes and community based creative interventions with (i)NGOs War Child Holland, IRC,  UNICEF) for children and young people affected by conflict in DR Congo, Sudan, Eritrea, the Caucasus, and the Balkans, and working with the British Council as an artist, consultant and trainer in Iran, Syria, Georgia and Oman. Current reflective work explores the role of the creative arts and cultural expression as mode of resistance, resilience and survival in conflict and post conflict environments, and on borders, and supervising human rights defenders and activists in their work and wellbeing.
