Collaboration with the Yunus Rajabi Music Institute in Uzbekistan

As part of the major ERC project "Maqam Beyond Nation" led by the Music Department, SOAS has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Yunus Rajabi Music Institute in Uzbekistan. Upcoming activities include a series of concerts and musical collaborations in Tashkent, Almaty, Venice and London.

Over Spring and Summer 2025, our Maqam Beyond Nation researchers have been working with leading musicians from Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to curate a new border-crossing concert repertoire drawing on the Maqām traditions of Central Asia. We are trialing the repertoire in October in concerts in Almaty and Tashkent, and we will bring the musicians to Europe for a concert tour in May 2026.
