Colloquium on just and sustainable finance brings researchers together at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro
This May, the Colloquium on Just and Sustainable Finance, taking place at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), launched the Brazilian Centre for Sustainable Finance (CeFis), a UFRJ-based think tank funded by the Climate and Society Institute.
The event, organised by the SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance and UFF Financialization and Development Research Group and led by Thereza Balliester Reis, Fernanda Feil and Fernando Teixeira, brought together Brazilian and international researchers to discuss green finance, financial inclusion, and public policy responses to the climate crisis as part of the ESRC award to foster collaboration between Brazilian and UK researchers.
The Colloquium opened on May 22 with the Young Researchers Session, featuring presentations by PhD students from UFRJ and SOAS (Damon Aitken and Yu Sun) on sustainable finance in Brazil and internationally. This was followed by a session on Local Development, which presented case studies on green finance initiatives and financial inclusion policies from around the world, including the current ESRC-funded project on Fomenta Maricá.
On the second day, three renowned Brazilian scholars opened the session: Laura Carvalho (Open Society Foundation), Marco Crocco (UFMG), and Daniela Baccas (BNDES), who discussed public policies aimed at addressing climate, environmental, and social crises.
Over the course of two days, the colloquium drew an audience comprising local researchers and students, as well as researchers from other universities and states, such as the University of Campinas (Unicamp).
