Heritage Horizon programme

Heritage Horizon is a specialised 9-month training programme, designed and delivered by the School of Arts at SOAS in partnership with the Saudi Heritage Commission, to equip researchers and professionals working in cultural heritage with the knowledge and skills to enhance the impact of their research.

This programme aims to bring together interdisciplinary research across the heritage sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including researchers in archaeology, handicrafts, intangible cultural heritage, urban heritage, as well as heritage management, protection and science.

With teaching taking place in Saudi Arabia, UK and online, the programme will include contributions from academic staff from the School of Arts and Doctoral School, as well as providing the opportunity for participants to build professional links with heritage experts, publishers and other related professionals from within the sector.

Programme objectives

  • Enhance the capacity of researchers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
  • Promote Saudi heritage globally
  • Enable participants to contribute actively to global heritage research
  • Build professional networks with heritage sector experts

Programme duration

9 months; from September 2025 to May 2026

Required qualifications

  1. Professional and Academic Qualification: Master’s level qualification or above and/or equivalent professional experience conducting research.
  2. English Proficiency: IELTS score of minimum 6.5 equivalent and/or have completed a degree in international or local university where classes are taught in English.
  3. Professional Experience: 5-8 years’ experience working in cultural heritage fields (urban Heritage, world heritage, intangible heritage, handicrafts, and archaeology).
  4. Research Interests: Demonstrated knowledge and interest for writing and research in the fields of cultural heritage.
  5. Saudi Citizenship: Participants must Saudi nationals and be able, willing and financially responsible to travel internationally for training in Riyadh and London.
