Marcus Gilroy-Ware appointed Lecturer in Creative Digital Media

22 April 2022

We are thrilled to announce that Mr Marcus Gilroy-Ware has been appointed Lecturer in Creative Digital Media in the SOAS Centre for Creative Industries, Media and Screen Studies (CCIMSS) and will be joining us in the School of Arts on 20th June.

Marcus describes himself as an interdisciplinary writer and scholar working on media, politics, technology and capitalism. His recent research has examined the structural origins of misinformation, both in the context of the neocolonial patterns adopted by big tech in the developing world, and in relation to the reactionary turn that politics has taken in the Global North since 2015. He is author of After the Fact? The Truth about Fake News (2020) and Filling the Void: Emotion, Capitalism and Social Media (2017). He is completing his DPhil by Publication, entitled 'The Disinformation Society: Misinformation and disinformation in the late-capitalist public sphere', which he will defend in summer 2022.

On his appointment, Marcus has commented: 'I’m overjoyed to be joining SOAS, for which I’ve always had a special kind of admiration, and really looking forward to meeting my new colleagues. The urgency with which scholars must undertake their engagement with the world feels more intense than it has for a long time, and particularly in that context I'm delighted to have the chance to contribute to the work being done at CCIMSS and in the School of Arts more broadly.'
