SOAS face UCL in first round of University Challenge

As the BBC’s University Challenge kicks off its new season, a team of SOAS students are placing fingers on buzzers as they prepare to compete in the next episode of the series.

Airing 21 July on BBC 2, this heat sees them facing London neighbours UCL, answering quick-fire questions to test their knowledge on science, geography, pop culture, music and more.

Last year marked the first time in 6-years that a team from SOAS appeared on University Challenge, with SOAS narrowly missing out on a place in the second round as the episode ended in a series of tie-breakers with Durham University.

This year, the team is made up of five students from anthropology, politics, arts, history, economics, and international relations. Qualifying through try-outs in the Students’ Union last year, the team brings specialist knowledge from both their studies and time outside of class to this first round of the show.

The SOAS University Challenge Team

  • Andrew Graham (Captain), Medical Anthropology and Mental Health
  • Matthew Regan, Global Liberal Arts
  • V Davis-Aladren, Politics, Philosophy and Economics
  • Hatau Mozayen, History and Politics
  • Tommy Hill (Reserve), International Relations and Arabic

SOAS wishes our University Challenge team the very best of luck and looks forward to seeing their progress in the competition.

UCL v SOAS airs 21 July at 8.30pm on BBC 2
